SMSC - THE GOLDEN THREAD THROUGHOUT THE CURRICULUM
SMSC is not a separate subject taught explicitly but an aspect of learning that is promoted across the entire school curriculum. It is the golden thread which runs through all aspects of school life.

BRITISH VALUES

The DfE states that there is a need:

“To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.

Our school reflects British values in all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world and the wider world.

How DWE promotes SMSC and British values in school:

Remembrance Day 2024

Remembrance Day 2024

Today, children throughout the school came together to honour Remembrance Day and reflect on the importance of peace and gratitude.

During KS2's Remembrance Day assembly, the children were encouraged to think about the sacrifices made by those who serve or served in wars and conflicts.
As part of our commemoration, children across the school wrote their own poems to express their thoughts on remembrance, peace and respect. The poems were beautiful reflections of the children’s understanding and compassion.

Year 2 had a special visit to the local Cenotaph where they discussed the importance of Remembrance Day and read poems.

To show their support and respect, children who are members of uniformed organisations such as Brownies, Scouts, and Cubs proudly wore their uniforms to school. Seeing so many children in uniform helped make the day even more special and gave everyone a sense of unity and pride.

It was a thoughtful day that helped all our students understand the importance of remembrance, respect and hope for peace.

All Saints' Day

All Saints' Day

This week in our culture assemblies, KS1 and KS2 students learned about All SaintsDay, a special Christian feast day celebrated on November 1st. All SaintsDay is dedicated to honouring all saints who have shown courage, kindness and faith throughout history. By learning about All SaintsDay, our students gained an understanding of different traditions and were inspired to spread goodness and positivity in their own ways.

Sukkot

Sukkot

This week in our culture assemblies, KS1 and KS2 have been learning about the festival of SukkotSukkot is a joyful celebration in the Jewish tradition that marks the gathering of the harvest and commemorates the time the Israelites spent in the desert. The children enjoyed discovering how families build and decorate sukkahs (temporary shelters) to remember this journey and celebrate together. It’s been wonderful to explore the meaning of Sukkot and share in the spirit of community and thankfulness!

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is the over-arching umbrella that encompasses personal development across the whole curriculum. Please check the school's Facebook account and class pages for more SMSC opportunities.
