BRITISH VALUES
SMSC - THE GOLDEN THREAD THROUGHOUT THE CURRICULUM
BRITISH VALUES
The DfE states that there is a need:
“To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.
Our school reflects British values in all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world and the wider world.
How DWE promotes SMSC and British values in school:
A group of Year 6 pupils visited Holden Clough Primary School to take part in a Local Authority Mock Trial Competition which was organised and led by Greater Manchester Magistrates in the Community. Our pupils were part of the prosecuting team and this involved presenting their case using evidence from witnesses. We were impressed with how professional and confident the children were- they represented our school incredibly well and they should be proud of themselves!
The poet and author Matt Goodfellow visited school to share some of his poems and gave important messages about expressing your thoughts and life experiences through poetry. He inspired us to write some of our own poetry and to be creative with our writing. Years 5 and 6 were very lucky to take part in workshops with him and he shared the meaning behind the books The Final Year and The First Year.
This week, we have participated in a samba experience where we listened to samba music, moved to the music and played some instruments to create our own samba rhythm.
Online safety
As part of Safer Internet Week, Years 3 and 5 have had workshops with One Day Creative where they discussed staying safe online, gaming and regulating their emotions. Throughout the week, children from Nursery to Year 6 have worked hard to create some beautiful pieces of work.
NSPCC
This week, we have had the NSPCC in to work with Year 2, Year 5 and Year 6 on the theme of Speak Out and Stay Safe. This linked nicely with our safer internet week about staying safe online
Following on from Interfaith Week, children across the school have created some fantastic work inspired by their religious visitor. We’ve displayed it all in the KS2 hall and it looks excellent! Next time you’re in the KS2 hall, please take a moment to have a look - the children are very proud of their work.
Today, we came together to commemorate Remembrance Day. Children who are part of a uniformed organisation proudly wore their uniforms to school. UKS2 pupils took part in a live Remembrance Day lesson, while our youngest children in EYFS created beautiful poppy artwork. Across the school, children shared thoughtful Remembrance poems and painted their own poppies, which are now displayed on our windows around the school. This morning, we even discovered a real poppy growing in our school grounds! Year 2 also had a special visit to the local Cenotaph where they discussed the importance of Remembrance Day.
Diwali
This week, our children have been learning all about Diwali – the Festival of Lights. Our EYFS children took part in some lovely Diwali-themed activities, while KS1 and KS2 learned about the Diwali celebrations in assembly. A big thank you to one of our KS2 pupils, who shared her own Diwali experiences! Happy Diwali to all who are celebrating!

Sukkot
Sukkot
This week in our culture assemblies, KS1 and KS2 have been learning about the festival of Sukkot. Sukkot is a joyful celebration in the Jewish tradition that marks the gathering of the harvest and commemorates the time the Israelites spent in the desert. The children enjoyed discovering how families build and decorate sukkahs (temporary shelters) to remember this journey and celebrate together. It’s been wonderful to explore the meaning of Sukkot and share in the spirit of community and thankfulness!
Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is the over-arching umbrella that encompasses personal development across the whole curriculum. Please check the school's Facebook account and class pages for more SMSC opportunities.
